Writing- The Way We Express Ourselves on Paper

  • Writing is hard.
  • Writing is fun.
  • Writing is stupid.
These are three statements that our students may often make about writing. However, it is a topic that educators must teach because it is crucial to students development not only as students, but as human beings. As seen in the statements, many students may not be comfortable with writing and other students will love it, either which way, we as educators need to dig deep and figure out ways to teach this in the classroom.

I believe that good writing instruction can begin with giving students the choice to choose what they want to write about. Additionally, we need to set up an environment that is supportive of writing. Many students may feel uncomfortable writing at their desk, so as educators,  we need to give them a choice to decide where they want to write. Furthermore, students need to be provided with examples of good writing, average writing, and below average writing. By doing this, they can see what they need to do to write a good essay. Finally, I believe that students should not be assigned topics to write about unless necessary. Students should be given the choice to decide what they want to write about. This way, it can have more relevance to them.

These are just a few steps that I believe should be taken when teaching writing instruction. Feel free to post your ideas on the blog as we try to better writing instruction.
